Newcastle Brown Ale was first brewed in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The beer was originally created as a winter ale and was later reformulated as a pale ale. The 1960 merger of Newcastle Breweries with Scottish Brewers afforded the beer national distribution and sales peaked in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s.
In 1988, Newcastle Brown Ale was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle, who brewed the beer until 2004 when it was sold to Heineken International. Production was moved out of Tyneside to North Yorkshire in 2007 by Heineken. The ale and its former brewery were closely associated with Newcastle United.
