Belgian Strong Pale Ale, also known as Belgian Strong Golden Ale, is a style of beer that is pale straw to deep golden in colour. What sets them apart from other Belgian Pale Ales is their much higher alcohol content which can range from deliciously hidden to devastatingly present. Expect a complex and powerful ale, yet delicate with rounded flavours and a big, billowy, rocky, white head.
Hop and malt characters can vary, although most are fruity and quite hoppy. Duvel is the hallmark of this style and many other breweries have tried to imitate Duvel Moortgat’s quintessential example with similar references to the devil.
The Belgian Strong Pale Ale is very highly carbonated — even effervescent. It has a light to medium body, although lighter than the substantial gravity would suggest. It’s smooth but has a noticeable alcohol warmth.
