Westmalle Brewery is a Trappist brewery located in Westmalle Abbey in Belgium. It is one of only 11 Trappist breweries in the world that are allowed to use the Trappist name. Westmalle Brewery is known for its two flagship beers, Westmalle Dubbel and Westmalle Tripel.
Westmalle Brewery was founded in 1836 by a group of Trappist monks who fled the French Revolution. The monks began brewing beer to support themselves and the abbey. The first ber brewed by Westmalle Brewery was a simple table beer, but the monks soon began experimenting with different styles of beer.
In 1934, Westmalle Brewery introduced the Westmalle Tripel, which is a golden strong ale. The Westmalle Tripel was a revolutionary beer at the time, and it helped to popularize the style of golden strong ale.
Westmalle Brewery is still owned and operated by the Trappist monks of Westmalle Abbey. The brewery follows strict brewing standards, and all of the beers are brewed using traditional methods. Westmalle beers are not filtered or pasteurized, and they are only available in kegs and bottles.
