A Roggenweizen is a German wheat beer brewed with a significant portion of rye malt alongside wheat and barley. Similar to a Hefeweizen in yeast character, it often displays the classic clove-like phenolics and banana-like esters from traditional weizen yeast strains. The rye adds a distinct spicy, earthy note and a fuller, slightly slick mouthfeel. The body is often rich and chewy, with a hazy appearance from both the rye proteins and yeast. Hop bitterness is low, keeping the focus on the interplay between yeast-derived fruit and spice and the rye’s peppery character. It’s essentially a Hefeweizen with a rye twist—complex, rustic, and deeply flavourful.
