Sudden Death Brewing is a modern German craft brewery and brewpub located in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein. Founded by ice hockey fans Olli Schmökel and Ricky Nagel, the brewery channels its founders’ passions for hockey, rock ’n’ roll and bold beer into its identity and lineup — the name “Sudden Death” itself comes from the sudden-victory rule in ice hockey.
The brewery specialises in hop-forward and experimental beers, particularly IPAs (including New England/hazy and double/imperial versions), but also pours fruited sours, pastry stouts and creative seasonal releases. Their beers are known for strong hop character, juicy profiles and quirky names, and they’ve built a reputation beyond Germany with distribution in multiple European countries.
